Philippine Eagle at Mt Kitanglad

The birding adventure to Mt. Kitanglad was wonderful. The birding was great, with many different species seen, including many lifers for me. One of the highlights, among many, was seeing the Philippine eagles. They were nesting, and there was one eaglet in the nest we were fortunate to observe.

The habitat is varied – farmland, grown-over fallow fields, forests, and forest edges with shrubs. The farmers are employing a slash and burn method of clearing land for farming, and are using pesticides and herbicides.

The days started off with partly cloudy skies, with thunderstorms in the afternoon. On Saturday the trails turned into rivers - the downpour was so intense. Sunday wasn't as torrential, but we got quite wet both days.

The daytime provided warm, comfortable temperatures, and the nights were a bit chilly. The adventure is quite a memorable one. I'm happy to have had such a knowledgeable guide (thanks Tim) and enthusiatic birding companions! The local guides were also wonderful, and were really into birding, which was a pleasure.

TRIP NOTES: Blue-and-white Flycatcher sighting by YueYun: "When I first saw the bird perched on a branch, it was only a dark silhouette. When I got my bins on it, I could see that its back was of a nice deep velvety blue.

It then turned slightly and I could see it had pure white underparts. Then it flew off. I didn't see the face or full front of the bird. It was medium size and had an upright stance. I don't recall seeing such a bird before. Tim thought it was the Blue and White Flycatcher after I described it."
