This photo of a nesting Philippine Frogmouth was taken back in 2013 in the La Mesa Nature Reserve. I was a fairly young birder then and it was the time I really learned about proper behavior when observing and photographing nesting birds.

During this special time when a chick is hatched, we must all the more be careful and respectful of the welfare of the birds. Observe proper nest etiquette!
- Stay as far away as you can. Use binoculars or a spotting scope to get a better view.
- Stay as briefly as possible. Do not leave any trash and food near the nest so as not to attract rats, ants, and other predators.
- Never disturb any vegetation around the nest if only to get a better view.
- If the parent bird shows signs of distress, you are too close. Move farther away from the nest.
Disturbing the nest might make the young leave it prematurely. No matter what species of bird is nesting, from the common Yellow-vented Bulbuls to these much harder to find Frogmouths, let us all be responsible and respectful of birds and all wildlife.
