Let me start this book review by saying that Ornithography by Jessica Roux is such a beautifully crafted book! The book caught my eye immediately with its cover which gives the vibe for blending art, folklore, and the intrinsic beauty of birds. It stands out for its exquisite illustrations, depicting 100 birds in delicate detail. Each page makes you want to linger after reading the meaning and lore behind each species, taking time to appreciate both the aesthetic and symbolic presentation of birds across cultures.

Beyond its visual appeal, the text is equally rewarding. Roux presents insightful and accessible narratives on bird lore and symbolism. From the straightforward meanings of each bird to references in mythology, etymology, history, and traditional beliefs, the book takes readers on a journey around the world, anchored by our favorite feathered friends. Each entry (which is very short and easy to read) offers meaningful context, allowing readers to deepen their understanding of how birds have inspired human imagination, spirituality, and storytelling through time.

This book made me slow down from the fast-paced routine that has become my life this year. I did not read it in one sitting but chose to linger in its pages until I felt a bit more relaxed and breathed a bit easier. This year, I haven’t been out birding as much as I wanted to and this book allowed birds to remain in my life, providing me with their calming presence through the pages of this book.

The elegant artwork and informative text make Ornithography more than just an illustrated guide. For me, reading it became a contemplative reading experience. I guess this would be especially true for birders who want to appreciate birds from a different perspective.
