This year’s Asian Bird Fair in Seosan, Korea was our first time attending since becoming members of the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines, and it turned out to be one of the most memorable experiences of our birding journey. We have always loved nature trips and wildlife encounters, but it was only after visiting the 13th ABF in Las Piñas last year that we became curious about the ABF. Seeing how interesting the participating organizations and tour operators were made us want to join the next fair, so we booked a trip to Korea without hesitation.

The 14th ABF offered a vibrant mix of learning, interaction, and discovery. Each day had a variety of activities, including insightful talks and presentations representing different birding regions around Asia. There was also plenty of free time to explore the booths.

Different organizations showcased local bird species, conservation programs, books, merchandise, and ecotourism destinations. Walking from one booth to another felt like taking a tour around Asia through the shared passion for birds. Conversations came easily because everyone had the same spark in their eyes whenever the topic turned to birdwatching. Shared meals became moments to exchange stories and learn about birding in places we had never visited. The ABF dinners and the raffle brought everyone together in a lively, fun atmosphere and set the tone for many new friendships.

One of the most memorable parts of the fair was the series of guided excursions. Seosan is a crucial stopover site for migratory birds, and visiting its wetlands made us understand why. During our birdwatching trips we went to Cheonsuman Bay and other important habitats. Seeing thousands of birds fly, feed, and rest in such a vast and peaceful landscape was awe-inspiring. We encountered cranes, geese, and ducks, and other species that were lifers for us. Sharing these moments with fellow birders made the experience even more exciting, and every new sighting felt like a small celebration.

The excursions also introduced us to Seosan’s cultural heritage. We visited temples, historical areas, and traditional sites that gave us a deeper appreciation for the local culture beyond the fair venue. These experiences added richness to the trip and reminded us that birdwatching is connected to the land, the people, and the stories that shape a place.

What made the ABF truly special was the atmosphere of unity. Even with different languages, cultures, and backgrounds, everyone found common ground through their love of birds. Conversations flowed naturally, and the sense of community felt warm and genuine.
Our first Asian Bird Fair was an inspiring and unforgettable experience. It strengthened our passion for birdwatching, deepened our appreciation for conservation, and connected us with people who share the same love for nature. We left Seosan feeling grateful and excited to join the next ABF!
