On April 26, 2026, my local birding patch became the center of attention when a Little Curlew, one of the Philippines’ rare migrant visitors, was discovered in the area.
A single bird was first spotted in the morning, followed by the exciting sight of a second individual later in the afternoon. News of the find spread quickly among members of the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines, with birders immediately reaching out for directions and field tips, turning an ordinary day of patch birding into an unforgettable event that lasted for a week.
For many who made the journey to see them, the Little Curlews became the “star birds” of the season: a mega lifer, Philippine rarity, blockbuster tick, and undoubtedly one of the most sought-after sightings of the month.
For me, the encounter was a rewarding reminder of the value of regular patch birding. Consistent visits to this local patch continue to reveal both regular and migrant species, including occasional rare visitors that make every outing worthwhile. The excitement generated by these Little Curlews is something our local birding community will remember for years to come.
