January is a hectic time for the WBCP participating in the annual Asian Waterbird Census. Aside from the counts, meetings and a couple of guided birdwatching trips were also conducted.

Jan. 11 – Asian Waterbird Census: Lake Paoay, Ilocos Norte. Total birds counted was 1,336 which include Philippine Duck, Tufted Duck, Great Cormorant, and Grey Heron.

Jan. 12 – Records Committee Meeting at the Lu residence, Manila. The WBCP Records Committee met and re-apppointed Arne Jensen as its Chairman with Christian Perez as vice-chairman. Other members of the committee include Leni Sutcliffe, Tinggay Cinco, Mark Villa, Jops Josef, Maia Tanedo, Rob Hutchinson, Susie Gavinio, Adri Constantino, Kitty Arce, Lala Espanola and Desmond Allen.

Jan. 15 – Guided Trip in Ateneo. A guided birdwalk was conducted in the Ateneo de Manila campus in Quezon City in line with their celebration of Bio Week. Species seen include Brown Shrike, Long-tailed Shrike, Collared Kingfisher, and Peregrine Falcon.

Jan. 16 – Talk and Guided Trip for Laguna Bel Air School. This was a followup birding activity to an introductory talk in the Laguna Bel Air School. This time the students were brought out and they birded in the area just outside their campus.

Jan. 18 – Asian Waterbird Census in Balanga City, Bataan. Total birds counted was 12,248 which include Black-winged Stilt, Chinese Egret, Great Egret, and Whiskered Tern.
Jan. 19 – Asian Waterbird Census in the Las Pinas-Paranaque Critical Habitat & Ecotourism Area, Coastal Road, Paranaque. Total birds counted was 2,525 which include Rufous Night Heron, Kentish Plover, and Pacific Golden Plover.

Jan. 19 – Asian Waterbird Census in Bangkong Malapad, Sasmuan, Pampanga. Total birds counted was 10,568 which include Caspian Tern, Little Tern, and Black-tailed Godwit.

Jan. 20 – Asian Waterbird Census in Lake Naujan, Oriental Mindoro. Total birds counted was 6,785 which include Tufted Duck, Whiskered Tern, Great Egret, and Wandering Whistling Duck.
Jan. 24 – Asian Waterbird Census in Malalag Bay, Davao del Sur. Total birds counted was 4,482 which inlcude Philippine Duck, Javan Pond Heron, and Black-winged Stilts.
Jan. 24-25 – Asian Waterbird Census in Bicol River Estuary, Camarines Sur. Total birds counted was 13,986 which include Northern Shoveler, Chinese Egret, and Rufous-necked Stint.
